Washtenaw County purportedly gained its name from an Ojibwa word. Originally spelled Washtenong it was altered to Washtenaw when it was set off in 1822. The fertile Huron River valley supported a considerable Native American population prior to French exploration and eventual Euro-American settlement. During both the Revolution and the War of 1812 the Native Americans sided with the British. After the eventual U. S. victory, the indigenous populations declined to free up land for European settlers. Due its location between Detroit and what would become Chicago, the county had the established Sauk Trail running through it. This early thoroughfare intersected two trails and early roads leading to points west including: Vincennes, Green Bay, Fort Wayne and Little Traverse Bay, Prairie du chien as well as Chicago. The University of Michigan was moved to Ann Arbor in 1837 and Eastern Michigan University, originally a teaching school, was established in 1852 making Washtenaw County a strong educational hub of the state. Farming remains strong in the county to the present day.
