- Respond to identity verification letters from Treasury using the instructions provided in the letter.
Treasury cannot process returns when there is an outstanding identity verification letter on the account. If no response is received, Treasury will assume the return was fraudulent and the return will remain on hold. Incomplete or late responses to Treasury letters can result in delayed processing, credits or refunds to be disallowed, and, in some cases, the return may not be able to be processed.
- PIN Letters: Read and follow the directions provided in the letter instructing you to use Michigan Treasury eServices to enter the personal identification number provided. This must be done within 30 days of the letter’s date.
- Documentation Request Letters: Read and follow the instructions provided in the letter instructing you to submit documentation to prove your identity.
- Additional Information Request Letters: Read and follow the instructions provided in the letter.
- If you experienced identity theft, provide Treasury with a copy of the IRS affidavit (Form 14039), police reports, and any other supporting documentation.
If information is missing or unclear, Treasury must request additional information, which delays processing of your return.
