This tool is for the search and review of commodity codes and is for reference purposes only. Vendors must add commodity codes to their account via the SIGMA VSS system.
Go to SIGMA VSSCommodity codes are a numerical classification system that correlate to various goods and services. When vendors register to do business with the state, they add commodity codes to their account in SIGMA VSS that correspond to the goods and services they sell. The State of Michigan uses the National Institute of Governmental Purchasing (NIGP) code system. Commodity codes are sometimes referred to as "NIGP codes" for this reason.
There are three primary reasons you should select commodity codes and keep them updated:
Federal procurement systems such as SAM.gov use North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes. This is a similar but different system than NIGP codes which the State of Michigan uses.
The State of Michigan does not use NAICS codes. The State of Michigan uses NIGP codes.
