Workshops will expand on the Archives of Michigan’s Save Michigan History program
Lansing, MICH. — Today, the Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget (DTMB) announced that the Archives of Michigan has opened registration for workshops on disaster preparedness, emergency mitigation, and salvage recovery of historical public records and cultural heritage materials.
"The Archives of Michigan is excited to expand on the Save Michigan History program and host three different Disaster Response Workshops across Michigan,” said Mark Harvey, state archivist of Michigan. “The workshops are going to allow us to be better prepared and respond when a disaster strikes and puts Michigan’s public records at risk.”
The workshops are designed to build on the established Save Michigan History program and address the growing environmental challenges of local organizations caring for public records in Michigan, especially for those which are located in remote areas prone to extreme weather.
The full-day, hands-on workshops, delivered by instructors from the Northeast Document Conservation Center, are designed for staff and volunteers at local government offices and cultural heritage organizations in Michigan. Upon completion, attendees may also join a cohort of “cultural heritage emergency responders.” The Archives of Michigan will oversee and manage the volunteer cohort, fostering communications and maintaining a network that can be assembled and activated in times of need.
2026 Disaster Response Workshop Dates and Locations
“We encourage staff and volunteers who care for archival records to sign up for one of the workshops,” said Erika McDowell, traveling archivist for the Archives of Michigan. “The ultimate goal of these workshops is to preserve Michigan history by helping attendees understand how best to plan and prepare, as well as salvage, historical public records and heritage materials when disaster strikes.”
