State of Michigan receives national recognition for innovative state technology project

The National Association of State Chief Information Officers awards Michigan State CIO Office Special Recognition Award for "Revolutionizing Smart Benefit Systems" initiative

On Oct. 1, the State of Michigan was awarded the State CIO Office Special Recognition Award from the National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO) during their annual conference in New Orleans. The annual program celebrates the use of technologies that “address critical business problems, more easily connect citizens to their government, improve business processes and create new opportunities that improve the lives of citizens.”

This year, over 120 submissions were received from NASCIO member states and territories. The association named 10 winning states in technology topics ranging from cybersecurity and data management to emerging technologies and business process innovation.

The State of Michigan was recognized for the “Revolutionizing Smart Benefit Systems” initiative, which enhances the processing of applications and renewals for the Michigan Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) administered by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). The initiative aimed to improve overall program transparency by providing real-time updates on SNAP application status.

In addition, the initiative also helps reduce the workload of eligibility specialists and help desk staff and enables MDHHS to maintain a strong commitment to accuracy, compliance, and innovative technologies, all while allowing the State of Michigan to continue positioning itself as a leader in leveraging technology to improve government services.
