Michigan’s Public Safety Communications System celebrates 30 years of protecting Michiganders
September 24, 2025
LANSING, Mich. – Today, the Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget (DTMB) Office of Michigan’s Public Safety Communications System (MPSCS) hosted a special event to honor their employees and partners for their 30th anniversary.
“It was an amazing day to celebrate the role MPSCS, its employees, and partners have had in providing three decades of public service to Michigan’s public safety communities and residents,” said Brad Stoddard, director of MPSCS.
With more than 350 radio towers and over 156,000 radios in use, MPSCS provides the critical emergency communications backbone that supports public safety and emergency response across the state. MPSCS currently supports law enforcement, fire departments, emergency medical services, emergency management, schools, and many other government organizations supporting Michiganders.
“Thirty years ago, Michigan embarked on a standards-based system that would not only change the emergency communications operating model across the state of Michigan but would be the catalyst for change across the nation for more than 40 other states,” Stoddard continued. “We became the model for statewide emergency communications systems and look forward to continuing our partnerships with local, state, federal, tribal, and private first responders in all 83 counties.”
From the early days in the 1990s as the nation’s first statewide communication system, MPSCS has evolved into one of the largest, most reliable public safety infrastructure networks in the world.
In fact, several state and international delegations have contacted MPSCS to learn more about how it developed a widespread, beneficial solution for first responders, underscoring its national and global reputation.
“Today’s 30-year celebration is not only about honoring the past but also looking ahead to continuing the mission of supporting Michigan’s public safety for decades to come,” Stoddard said.
