10 DTMB-managed buildings achieve ENERGY STAR Rated High Performer status
December 04, 2025
DTMB is proud to announce that 10 state-managed buildings achieved ENERGY STAR Rated High Performer status for 2024. ENERGY STAR is an Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Energy funded program that assesses the energy efficiency of products, homes, and commercial buildings. This recognition is a testament to DTMB’s commitment to sustainable operations, innovative facility management, and responsible energy use.
“We are incredibly proud of the work that the DTMB Building Operations teams have done to ensure our state-managed buildings are as energy efficient as possible,” said Ric Martin, program strategies and solutions director. “We also appreciate the partnership of our building tenants - their commitment to incorporating sustainable practices into their daily routine is essential in meeting our energy goals.”
Buildings are benchmarked in ENERGY STAR’s Portfolio Manager program to be rated on a scale from 1-100. Facilities that achieve a score of 75 or higher are considered high performers. These buildings, on average, use 35% less energy than similar buildings nationwide.
The following 10 DTMB-managed buildings achieved ENERGY STAR Rated High Performer status for 2024:
- MDOT Warehouse - 98
- Ellis/Lottery Building - 94
- Traverse City State Office Building - 89
- South Grand Building - 89
- Jerome T. Hart Building - 88
- Romney Building - 84
- Elliott-Larsen Building - 84
- VanWagoner Building - 84
- Vehicle and Travel Services Building - 83
- Jackson State Office Building – 77
The DTMB Building Operations team has implemented a range of impactful strategies to maintain and elevate energy performance, including:
- Conducting building energy audits to determine opportunities to increase energy efficiency
Creating and installing Building Intelligence Systems to allow for performance monitoring and immediate remote adjustments to prevent wasted energy
- Converting lighting to the high-efficient LED technology, including advanced lighting controls where feasible, such as daylight harvesting and occupancy sensors
- Repairing gaps in walls, doorways, and windows to secure the building envelope and prevent energy waste
- Temperature control optimization
- Implementing green and/or renewable technologies and practices where practical (i.e., solar voltaic, thermal storage, etc.)
DTMB is committed to leading by example in sustainability and energy efficiency. These ENERGY STAR Rated High Performers reflect not only the hard work of the DTMB facilities teams but also the support and cooperation of building tenants, whose daily actions contribute to a greener, more efficient environment.
