Michigan commits to protecting Michiganders’ personal information by celebrating Data Privacy Week
January 28, 2026
LANSING, Mich. – DTMB is celebrating Data Privacy Week Jan.26–30 to underscore Michigan’s everyday commitment to protecting personal information and promoting responsible, transparent data practices across government, business, and the public.
Observed annually, Data Privacy Week builds on Data Privacy Day (Jan. 28), which commemorates the 1981 signing of Convention 108, the first legally binding international treaty on privacy and data protection.
This year’s theme, “Privacy Takes a Team,” emphasizes that safeguarding personal data is not just a technical consideration, it’s a collaborative effort.
To raise awareness and empower employees, Michigan’s data privacy team will host a series of events during the week, including webinars with national experts, in-person professional meetups, and interactive activities.
“Privacy isn’t a solo effort—it takes a team,” said Michigan’s Chief Privacy Officer Bari Wood. “Every State of Michigan employee plays a role in protecting personal information and maintaining public trust. Data Privacy Week is an opportunity to learn, collaborate, and reaffirm our commitment to responsible data practices.”
Why Data Privacy Matters
State of Michigan employees handle data that affects the public every day. As cyber threats rise and data collection grows, responsible information handling is essential. The Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget, along with other state entities, continues to lead efforts in promoting cybersecurity, data governance, and privacy best practices across the public sector.
Data Privacy Week serves as a vital reminder of the importance of safeguarding personal data, raising awareness about privacy practices, and empowering individuals to take control of their digital lives.
