Laws and rules are set by the State to regulate dredging action within the Great Lakes and Inland Lakes and Streams. Resources are available regarding the testing of dredge sediment.
Permits are required for dredging submerged areas pursuant to Parts 301, Inland Lakes and Streams, Part 303, Wetlands Protection, and/or Part 325, Great Lakes Submerged Lands, of the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act, 1994 PA 451, as amended.
Sediment testing may be required under certain circumstances as part of the permit application review, as outlined in Water Resources Division (WRD) Policy and Procedure WRD-048, “Sediment Testing for Dredging Projects” enacted on April 13, 2018. The previous Policy and Procedure 09-018, “Dredge Sediment Review”, was rescinded on April 13, 2018.
