Forensic science serves an important role in Michigan's criminal justice system. The results of forensic testing may
- assist in the investigation of a crime
- be used in criminal proceedings
- eliminate a person from suspicion.
The Forensic Science Division operates seven regional forensic laboratories which provide forensic services to law enforcement agencies and fire investigation units.
Expertise in the Laboratory & on the Scene
Our scientists have expertise in 11 forensic specialties and analyze a wide range of physical evidence in criminal investigations.
Crime Scene Response Teams are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to document, process, and collect evidence at crime scene locations.
FSD is accredited by ANAB for forensic testing in Biology, Document Examination, Firearms and Tool Marks, Fire Debris and Explosives, Footwear and Tire, Friction Ridge, Trace Materials, Seized Drugs, and Toxicology. Our current scope of accreditation may be found here. Not every laboratory performs testing in every discipline.
