Source Water Assessment
Source Water Assessment
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) has completed an assessment of each source of drinking water in community and noncommunity public water supplies, as required by the 1996 reauthorization of the federal Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA). The 1996 amendments to the SDWA required states to:
- Identify the areas that supply public drinking water.
- Inventory contaminants and assess water susceptibility to contamination.
- Inform the public of the results.

Source Water Protection Program
This program assists local communities utilizing groundwater and surface water for their municipal drinking water supply systems in protecting their water source. A source water protection program minimizes the potential for contamination by identifying and protecting the area that contributes water to municipal water supply source. A source water protection program also includes management strategies to reduce contamination risk, contingency and new source planning, and public education and outreach.
