Nonferrous metallic mining
Nonferrous metallic mining
Regulated by Part 632: Nonferrous Metallic Mining, nonferrous minerals are important economic minerals such as copper, nickel, zinc, gold, and silver. Some of these metals are very important globally for manufacturing, including production of green technologies such as electric vehicles and emission control catalysts.
Part 632 provides a sound regulatory framework for construction, operation, and reclamation of mining operations required for the safe and environmentally sustainable extraction of these metallic minerals. EGLE's Geologic Resources Management Division (GRMD) implements Part 632. The nonferrous metallic mining industry is also regulated by other environmental statutes and divisions within EGLE such as the Air Quality Division and Water Resources Division.

Eagle Mine
Eagle Mine is an active underground nickel and copper mine operated by Eagle Mine LLC, a subsidiary of Lundin Mining Inc, located in Michigamme Township, northern Marquette County.
Eagle ore deposits are high-grade magmatic sulfide deposits containing primarily nickel and copper mineralization and minor amounts of cobalt, platinum, palladium, and gold. Surface facilities cover an area of about 150 acres and include temporary storage of ore, development rock, and aggregate; a cement rock fill plant; mine ventilation and egress; access decline; water storage, water treatment plant and treated water discharge system; and other ancillary facilities.

Humboldt Mill
Eagle Mine ore is transported by haul trucks to Humboldt Mill, located in Humboldt Township, Marquette County, for processing.
The Humboldt Mill facility was originally constructed in 1954 to concentrate low grade iron ore from the Humboldt Mine. The Humboldt Mine was developed in two stages over its life, beginning with underground ore removal, followed by open pit extraction. In the early 1980’s, the mill was converted to gold ore processing and operated until 1989 when the Ropes Mine, located about 10 miles from the mill, was closed. After reconstruction of the mill, Eagle Mine began crushing and processing ore to nickel and copper concentrates. As during the processing of Ropes ore, residual tailings are placed for permanent subaqueous disposal in the Humboldt Tailings Disposal Facility (the previously mined pit area).

Copperwood Mine
The Copperwood Mine is a development-stage project located in Ironwood and Wakefield townships, Gogebic County.
Exploration of the area led to the discovery of the Copperwood deposit in the 1950’s, which is a sediment-hosted stratiform copper deposit hosted in the Nonesuch Formation within the Presque Isle Syncline, with fine-grained chalcocite as the copper bearing mineral. Highland Copper Company owns the project and currently holds several permits required by EGLE to conduct mining and associated activities, including a Mining Permit. Their mine plan includes underground mining methods with an anticipated life of mine of about 14 years. Construction has not commenced.
-
White Pine North Mine Project
The White Pine Mine, located in Carp Lake Township, Ontonagon County, operated from 1954 to 1995 producing approximately 198 million tons of copper ore.
White Pine is a sediment-hosted stratiform copper-silver deposit with mineralization occurring as chalcocite, native copper, and native silver. The White Pine North project, which is an extension of the White Pine Mine, was acquired by Highland Copper Company.
-
Back Forty Mine Project
The Back Forty Mine project is a polymetallic (zinc-copper-lead- gold-silver) volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit, is located in Lake Township, Menominee County.
Gold Resources Corporation has acquired the project.
