The Michigan Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) provides all persons (except persons incarcerated in correctional facilities) with access to public records of public bodies. Requests to inspect or receive public records from EGLE must be in writing and describe the requested records with enough detail to enable the department to identify and locate the requested records. Some records are exempt from disclosure under the FOIA or another statute and thus will not be provided. A fee may be charged to process your request. Please note that many records are available that do not require a formal FOIA request.

The US Ecology site has been an industrial facility since the 1940s and waste management activities have been conducted at this site since 1974. When the federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act governing hazardous waste was enacted in 1976, the facility was automatically authorized to continue to operate because it was already operating. Under the renewed license, the container storage capacity increased from 53,118 gallons to 500,739 gallons, and US Ecology is authorized to increase their solid hazardous waste treatment operations to 600 tons per day. In total, the renewed license allows storage of up to 500,739 gallons of hazardous waste in containers and up to 176,200 gallons in tanks. No waste would be permitted to remain in storage permanently at the facility. The treated wastewater will continue to be discharged to the Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA) sanitary sewer after treatment and all treated, solidified waste is authorized to be disposed off-site at an appropriately licensed off-site disposal facility.
At US Ecology, all liquid hazardous waste treated in the treatment, storage, and disposal facility are stored and processed in above-ground tanks. The tanks are monitored to detect leaks and have secondary containment. The waste is sent through a primary and secondary treatment process that neutralizes the hazardous waste and removes hazardous substances. It is then dewatered in a filter press, where the solids are sent to a licensed off-site disposal facility. The wastewater is treated to remove contaminants and discharged to the sanitary sewer, as permitted by the GLWA.
At US Ecology currently, all solid waste is treated in vaults. Treatment consists of solidification. Assuming the necessary infrastructure changes are made, they will also be authorized to treat solid hazardous waste via stabilization with lime and cement under the renewed license. The treated waste is then sent to a licensed off-site disposal facility. The air exhaust from this hazardous waste treatment process is treated to remove contaminants using a baghouse filtration control device, permitted by the Air Quality Division.
US Ecology also has a solid waste license which authorizes the processing and solidification of non-hazardous industrial waste sludge at this facility. The US Ecology license for solid waste processing is not part of this action. It is regulated by EGLE under Part 115, Solid Waste, of the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act, 1994 Act 451, as amended, and its administrative rules and is authorized separately under those regulations.
The US Ecology facility is one of fourteen hazardous waste treatment storage and disposal facilities across Michigan. Together, these facilities provide treatment, storage, and disposal options to commercial, industrial, and municipal hazardous waste generators. There are approximately 14,000 hazardous waste generators in the Wayne County area. U.S. Ecology is one of seven operating treatment, storage, and disposal facilities in the Wayne County area.
