Medical Waste Regulatory Information
Medical Waste Regulatory Information
The Medical Waste Regulatory Program (MWRP) administers and enforces Michigan's Medical Waste Regulatory Act (MWRA), Part 138 of the Public Health Code, 1978 PA 368, as amended, and the Administrative Rules adopted pursuant to the Act; (see web link below under Rules and Laws for a copy.) The MWRA includes regulations requiring proper handling, storage, treatment, and disposal of potentially infectious medical waste.
The objective of the MWRP is to protect those persons who come into contact with medical waste from exposure to the risk of injury, infection, or disease that is created from improperly disposed medical waste. The MWRA mandates how medical waste producing facilities must manage their medical waste from the point at which it is generated to its ultimate disposal point. Generators of medical waste are also required to register initially and every 3 years thereafter as producing facilities of medical waste under the MWRA.
