FAQ: Industrial Stormwater

The goal of the State of Michigan’s Industrial Stormwater Program is to protect Michigan’s public health and freshwater resources by reducing pollutants discharged from industrial facilities during storm events.

  • Determining if your facility is required to have an industrial stormwater permit will depend on if the facility's primary industrial activity is regulated, if there is a stormwater discharge to surface waters of the state through a point source, and if there are industrial materials and/or activities exposed to precipitation. EGLE has a guidance document on determining if your facility is required to obtain permit coverage, which will help walk you through making this determination.

  • Several different regulations may apply to wastewater and stormwater generated at composting facilities. EGLE has developed a guidance document on composting wastewater and stormwater to help you determine which regulations apply and what the requirements are.

  • Marinas that are involved in boat maintenance activities (including boat rehabilitation, mechanical repairs, boat or equipment washing, painting, fluid changes, winterization, fueling and lubrication) and discharge stormwater to surface waters of the state are regulated by the stormwater regulations. In addition, Marinas that discharge wastewater to the surface waters of the state are required to obtain a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit. EGLE has a guidance document for marinas that will help you determine if and what type of permit coverage is needed along with the necessary requirements.
