May 2 to 6 proclaimed Air Quality Awareness Week
May 02, 2022
Governor Gretchen Whitmer has proclaimed May 2-6 Air Quality Awareness Week. The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) is joining with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to encourage the public to “Be Air Aware & Prepared”.
Each day this week EGLE will focus on an air quality topic. Follow Air Quality Awareness Week information from EGLE, EPA and other agencies on social media by following the #AQAW2022 hashtag.
During this week, we will focus on a specific air quality topic every day.
- Monday – Wildfires & Smoke
- Tuesday - Asthma & Your Health
- Wednesday – Citizen Science & Sensors
- Thursday – Environmental Justice & Air Quality
- Friday – Air Quality Around the World
A great way to be air aware and to know how to prepare for days when air quality may be hazardous is to use the air quality index, sign up for notifications, understand what causes poor air quality, and take voluntary actions to improve the overall outdoor air quality in order to be aware and be prepared.
Air pollutants from various sources in the environment affect the quality of the air, leaving Michigan’s residents susceptible to health issues with severe impacts.
Vulnerable populations, including children, people with existing respiratory issues, people with heart disease, and the elderly are more susceptible to impacts and health effects from outdoor air pollution. Moreover, underrepresented communities are more susceptible to impacts and health effects from outdoor air pollution.
The spring and summer seasons also mean an increase in the frequency of wildfires add to the air pollution burden in some areas of the state.
EGLE’s air monitoring network, along with citizen science and sensors, provides information to help inform communities about existing air quality.
