EGLE invites schools to nominate students, classrooms for Environmental Service Award

As part of the State of Michigan’s Earth Day celebration, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) is inviting schools to nominate a student or classroom (grades 6-12), to be recognized for completing a school-sanctioned, environment-based project that has tangible results. Nominations are due by March 3.

For nominations to be considered, schools must verify the validity of each project with its outcome and must submit the nomination by email. To qualify as environment-based, the project must provide a benefit for Michigan flora, wildlife, air, water, land, or ecosystems. The project must have taken place between April 22, 2022 and February 1, 2023.

The following information is required to evaluate the submission:

  • Student Name and Classroom Grade
  • Teacher Name, Telephone Number, and Email Address
  • School Name, Address, and City
  • Project description with basic detail such as project goal, step-by-step instructions, length of project, before and after photos of the project, and beneficiary (school, wildlife, etc.).

Award nominations must be submitted via email in a letter that includes all the information required above by March 3. The Earth Day email is EGLE-EarthDay@Michigan.gov.

Nominations will be judged based on the student’s or classroom’s project design and benefits to Michigan flora, wildlife, air, water, land, or ecosystems. Two projects will receive an award, one to grades 6-8, and one to grades 9-12.

Winners will be notified by April 7, 2023. The winners will be honored in an online ceremony that will be posted the week of April 16 on the Earth Day webpage.
