EGLE's interactive calendar is designed to provide timely information on decisions before the Director, proposed settlements of contested cases, administrative rules promulgation, public hearings, meetings and comment deadlines, and environmental conferences, workshops and training programs.
The Michigan Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) provides all persons (except persons incarcerated in correctional facilities) with access to public records of public bodies. Requests to inspect or receive public records from EGLE must be in writing and describe the requested records with enough detail to enable the department to identify and locate the requested records. Some records are exempt from disclosure under the FOIA or another statute and thus will not be provided. A fee may be charged to process your request. Please note that many records are available that do not require a formal FOIA request.

Communities across the Upper Peninsula have been awarded over $760,000 over the past five years for scrap tire recycling projects and abandoned tire removal projects.

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy’s (EGLE) scrap tire program in the Upper Peninsula is in the spotlight this week, as the Upper Peninsula State Fair takes place in Escanaba. EGLE staff are on hand at the fair in the Ruth Butler Exhibition Building during fair hours to answer questions and provide helpful information on the scrap tire program and other environmental topics.

Motorists who drive over certain sections of County Road in 607 in Dickinson County are driving over pavement that was made with over 3,500 scrap tires. The rubberized asphalt has demonstrated better performance than conventional asphalt in a cold climate.
In Ontonagon County, an EGLE grant helped remove oversized mining, semi and passenger tires along 1.5 miles of Lake Superior shoreline.
Kirsten Clemens, EGLE’s scrap tire coordinator, notes that of the 10 million tires Michigan generates, 100% are recyclable. “Tires can be turned into mulch, incorporated into roads, shredded and used as aggregate in backfill and drain fields, not to mention new tires or plastic,” she said. “And since abandoned tires also pose a fire risk and a health risk from mosquito-borne illness, recycling is the best thing to do with scrap tires.”
Where to recycle used tires
EGLE is currently accepting applications for 2024 scrap tire grants. The deadline is Sept. 29.
The goal is to create a list of project ideas generated by community members and community groups that can serve as a resource for future funding opportunities.
EGLE grants have helped rural and underserved communities in Michigan host e-waste collection events.
The grant application period for schools and childcare center is open through Oct. 18.

The grants aim to advance the research, development, or demonstration of projects to create innovative and practical approaches to increase the reuse and recycling of batteries and other critical minerals through investments in Michigan’s universities and colleges. Michigan has selected 25 community-based organizations to join the state’s first Michigan (MI) Justice40 Accelerator, a 12-month program designed to build capacity and provide funding, training, and technical support to organizations serving under-resourced and underserved communities statewide. The year-long program will help meet the goals of the MI Healthy Climate Plan while addressing historical inequities.
