New year, new opportunity to declutter

If your New Year’s resolutions include decluttering, check out these tips from the Resource Recovery and Recycling Authority of Southwest Oakland County and the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy.

Updating your wardrobe for the new year? Don’t throw your old clothes or linens away, donate them. Search for local organizations that take them for free like Simple Recycling, Goodwill, Volunteers of America, or other non-profits. And, don’t forget to ask if they offer free pick-up, as many do.

If you’re replacing old batteries with new ones, do not place them in your recycling bin where they can become a fire hazard for you, the collection workers, and the sorting crew at the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF). Recycle them at drop-off locations. Home improvement retailers frequently offer household rechargeable battery recycling options. Thanks to recent federal grants, additional retailers like Staples and Batteries Plus are offering similar options.  If a retail collection is hard to find, check-out EGLE’s Household Hazardous Waste Webpage for drop off options hosted by local government or through electronics manufacturer takeback programs.

Did you receive something you don’t particularly want this holiday season? Don’t toss it! (You could re-gift it; it’s a form of recycling!)

When everything is said and done, it’s time to dispose of those receipts. They can be placed in the trash, as their glossy, thermal coating does not allow them to be recycled.
