By the Numbers: EGLE recruitment

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy’s (EGLE) more than doubled its recruiting efforts in 2024, says Cindy Whittum, EGLE’s recruitment and internship specialist.

 

Here’s a summary:

Internship Program:

  1. Gained approval to start paying our interns starting with summer 2025.
  2. Completed the first cohort of summer interns under the newly created structure.
    1. Sixteen interns were brought on board for the summer.
    2. One hired for full time role.
    3. Six retained at student assistants.

College and Candidate Outreach:

  1. Attended 34 College events (career fairs, presentations, tabling) interacting with over 700 students.
  2. Participated in seven State of Michigan Virtual Career Fairs.
  3. Exhibited at eight Professional/Community Events focusing on recruitment.
    1. Michigan Science Teachers Association
    2. Michigan Environmental Compliance Conference
    3. Michigan Career Educator & Employer Alliance
    4. Upper Peninsula State Fair
    5. Great Lakes Drinking Water Conference
    6. Michigan Sustainability Conference
    7. Historically Black Colleges and Universities Alumni Picnic
    8. MSU Black Alumni Association Homecoming Tailgate event
  4. Conducted 111 individual meetings with potential EGLE applicants.
    1. Help applicants understand the State of Michigan/Civil Service application process better.
    2. How to accurately read jobs postings and understand our job titles.
    3. Tips on how to tailor application materials to help qualified applicants to be more successful through the screening process.

Collaboration with Divisions

  1. Held six divisional meetings to discuss the state of recruitment and internships; answered questions; and provided suggestions for hiring process.
    1. One meeting with Air Quality Division managers/supervisors.
    2. Two meetings with Water Resources Division managers/supervisors.
    3. One meeting with Drinking Water and Environmental Health managers/supervisors.
    4. Two meetings with Personnel Liaisons from all divisions.

Twenty-six staff members from various divisions represented EGLE at career fairs and other events.
