EGLE grant will help bring new jobs to West Branch
July 28, 2025
A grant from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) will help clean up contamination and bring 20 new jobs to Ogemaw County. The owner will use the money in preparation for establishing its headquarters in West Branch.
The property at 201 North 8th Street was home to a bicycle manufacturer from 1948-1964 and a metal coatings company from 1964-2012. The site has been vacant since 2012. The building is dilapidated, and the city considers it a safety risk. Investigations using EGLE Brownfield Site Assessment funds found chemical compounds in soil and groundwater. The building has surfaces covered with lead-based paint. Window glaze, insulation, roofing and other materials contain asbestos. An underground storage tank (UST) is believed to be on site.
The $750,000 Brownfield Redevelopment Grant will be used for additional site assessments, lead and asbestos abatement, removal of the UST, limited demolition work, as well as excavation, transportation, and disposal of contaminated soil and paint waste.
The owner plans to rehabilitate the existing 84,150-square-foot building to be used as a headquarters, warehouse and manufacturing space. The $1.064 million project is expected to create 20 new full-time job equivalents. Redevelopment of the 7.75-acre site fits into the city’s plans to revitalize downtown West Branch by removing blight and increasing property values in the area. The renovation is expected to be finished in winter 2025.
More than half of EGLE’s annual budget supports local projects, protects public health and the environment, and helps create economic growth and jobs for Michigan workers. Redevelopment increases the value of brownfield sites and other nearby properties. In 2024 EGLE awarded $25.1 million in brownfield incentives to 87 projects around Michigan.
