From the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) School Safety Task Force:
In February 2022, the CISA School Safety Task Force released the K-12 School Security Guide Suite, a set of products designed to inform safety and physical security planning for the range of kindergarten through grade 12 (K-12) schools across the United States.
Developed in partnership with the RAND Corporation, the K-12 School Security Guide Suite is comprised of the CISA K-12 School Security Guide (3rd Edition) and accompanying School Security Assessment Tool (SSAT). The Guide and SSAT provide a comprehensive doctrine and methodology to assist schools in conducting more robust vulnerability assessments and implementing layered physical security elements across K–12 districts and campuses. Both products are available on CISA.gov and are designed to support school communities in strengthening their protection and mitigation capabilities against the range of targeted violence and crime-related threats they might face.

The Office of School Safety (OSS) along with the Michigan State Police (MSP) are deeply affected by the recent incidents of gun violence that have impacted our communities and our schools. After an incident of violence, teachers and parents are faced with difficult conversations with children about the event. Below please find resources to help in this process:
Children and adults should learn in a safe school environment. The Michigan Department of Education is continuing its approval of school safety training as an education-related professional learning credit for renewing an educator certificate for the upcoming 2022-23 academic year. This is a renewal of an approval first granted for the 2017-18 academic year and extended through the 2021-22 academic year.

OK2SAY has experienced a marked increase in the number of student safety tips. Since the program became operational in September 2014, OK2SAY has received more tips in the first four months of 2022 than it has in the any other quarter in the previous eight years.
To help educate students about the program, OK2SAY provides free student safety presentations. If your school is interested in learning more, please go to www.ok2say.com.

Michigan’s Public Act 401 of 2020 requires every public and nonpublic school to provide the MSP with at least one school official's emergency contact information twice a year. Ideally, each school should register the school official's contact information by September 1 and May 1, and/or if changes in personnel reflect new responsibilities. This emergency after-hours contact information will allow OK2SAY technicians to efficiently communicate with school personnel about potential harm or criminal activities directed at school students, school employees, and schools. The contact information is kept confidential and only accessed if there is an after-hours emergency necessitating communication with school personnel.

Ms. Kim Root | Section Manager
Ms. Kim Root comes to the OSS after more than a decade in the 8,000-student Huron Valley School District where she served as Executive Director of School Safety, Communications and Strategic Initiatives. Ms. Root implemented several key programs while in the Huron Valley School District, including staff training, building assessments, and annual reviews of the district’s Emergency Operations Procedures.
Ms. Mary Gager Drew | Department Specialist
Ms. Drew has been the program administer for OK2SAY, Michigan’s Student Safety Program, since it became operational in September 2014. Prior to working for the state of Michigan, Ms. Drew had 15 years of school safety experience working for the Michigan State University School of Criminal Justice and as a consultant on school safety for the MSP Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division (EMHSD). She also served as the Associate Director for the Michigan Association of Non-Public Schools. In addition, Ms. Drew worked in the Michigan State Senate and the Executive Branch specializing in children and victim related issues.
Mr. Jason Guthaus | Department Analyst
Mr. Guthaus is in his fourth year with the MSP and administered the 2018 and 2019 Competitive School Safety Grant Programs, and currently administers the 2022 appropriation. Prior to joining the MSP, he served roles in K-12 school security, juvenile justice, local law enforcement, and college campus safety. Mr. Guthaus holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Western Michigan University and a master’s degree in youth development from Michigan State University, as well as the Professional Emergency Manager designation from the MSP EMHSD.
Ms. Beth Beattie | Department Analyst
Ms. Beattie has been involved in public school education for over 30 years. She taught elementary school and secondary math and science. Prior to joining the OSS, Ms. Beattie spent several years as the International Baccalaureate Coordinator for Redford Union Schools. She has been with the OSS since April 2020.
Mr. Johnny B. Allen | Department Analyst
Mr. Allen has been with the OK2SAY Student Safety Program since May 2019. His duties include developing website content, digital media, videos, graphics, presentations, and print materials for OK2SAY and the OSS. Previously, he provided vital administrative and technology services for the state of Michigan's Department of Technology, Management, and Budget. Before working in state government, Mr. Allen worked in West Michigan's local radio and television broadcast markets.
Ms. Randa Hanes | Department Analyst
Ms. Hanes is one of the newest members of the OSS, coming to the office in January 2022. Ms. Hanes previously worked behind the scenes processing tips as a technician on the OK2SAY tip-line for almost two years. Prior to coming to the MSP, Ms. Hanes worked for four years as a Children’s Protective Services Investigator with MDHHS, and as a youth program volunteer in the Lansing area.
