US Ecology Wayne Disposal Inc. Hazardous Waste Landfill
The US Ecology Wayne Disposal, Inc. (WDI), is a hazardous waste landfill located at 49350 North I-94 Service Drive in Belleville, Michigan. WDI was first established in 1970, before hazardous waste handling and disposal operations were regulated under state or federal law. The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) has previously licensed WDI for the management of hazardous wastes under the operation and ownership control of Environmental Quality Company. In 2014, the Environmental Quality Company transferred ownership and operational control of WDI to US Ecology (USE). In 2022, Republic Services became the parent company of USE by purchasing the USE stock. USE remains the legal owner, operator, and permittee of WDI.
WDI’s Hazardous Waste Management Facility Operating License (License) issued by EGLE specifies the hazardous waste activities that WDI can perform. The federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act of 1976, as amended, its rules, and the corresponding state hazardous waste regulations specify how the facility must operate to protect human health and the environment. They also identify the authorities the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), Materials Management Division (MMD), has in licensing and overseeing the facility’s hazardous waste operations.
