The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) and the MiMTSS TA Center provided the following series of webinars focused on accelerated learning. Each webinar in the series shares the common focus on strategically preparing students for success in grade-level content through the implementation of accelerated learning strategies. The webinars build upon the series of informational guides developed by MDE with assistance from Michigan educators.

Accelerating Learning for English Learner Newcomers in 2022

Accelerating Learning for English Learner Newcomers

English learners who are Newcomers and Students with Limited or Interrupted Formal Education (SLIFE) have a unique set of challenges. Add the challenges of the current pandemic and this may sound overwhelming to educators and their administrators. This webinar provides an overview of current research on how educators and school systems can best support these learners.

Accelerating Learning Outcomes: Implementation in Action

Accelerating Literacy Outcomes: Implementation in Action

It is well known that informed educators and leaders are the best insurance to ensure class-wide instruction prioritizes essential literacy skills, prevents difficulties, and accelerates learning. The investment in educators' language and literacy knowledge is a springboard to examining and enhancing curriculum resources and student materials. Muskegon Heights Public School Academy System has begun its journey to provide educators, leaders, and staff with high-quality learning in evidence-based reading approaches, instructional methods, and ways to meaningfully embed educational equity to support ALL learners.

Accelerating Math Skills

Accelerating Math Learning with Targeted Supports

In this session, participants were introduced to the Math Recovery program. Specifically, participants learned more about how the program uses diagnostic assessments to identify what support students might need to stay on grade level.

Accelerating Student Learning Through Maximizing Student Engagement

Accelerating Student Learning Through Maximizing Student Engagement

This session provides K-12 educators with a practical "tool kit" of evidence-validated instructional strategies to dramatically increase student engagement across the grades and content areas. Intentionally creating classrooms in which ALL students are dynamically engaged in rigorous academic literacy is a potential "game-changer", especially when these practices are deliberately woven into the instructional culture across the school.

Assessment Practices for Acceleration

Assessment Practices for Acceleration

This session outlines ways for educators to use assessment in a dynamic way to accurately identify students' assets and opportunities for acceleration. It includes an overview of how purposeful assessment data are used to plan for robust, class-wide reading and math instruction that appropriately differentiates supports.

Integrating Social, Emotional, and Behavioral Supports with Academics to Accelerate Student Learning

Integrating Social Emotional and Behavioral Supports

To accelerate student learning, students need to feel like they belong, be emotionally well, and be supported within a proactive, predictable, and safe environment. This presentation focuses on the why what, and how of intentionally integrating social, emotional, and behavioral supports within a multi-tiered framework to ensure every student is able to access what they need socially, emotionally, and behaviorally to engage fully in their learning experiences.

Integrating Social Emotional Learning

Integrating Social Emotional Behavioral and Mental Health Supports to Promote Acceleration

Educators are well aware of the unique strengths and needs of their students. If children are to be safe, healthy, engaged, challenged, and supported, educators must incorporate social, emotional, and behavioral instruction and support within educational programming. It can be challenging to fit in all this content during the school day. This session provided information on the importance of addressing the child's needs and strategies to promote accelerated learning.

Intensifying Literacy Instruction to Accelerate Student Outcomes

Intensifying Literacy Instruction to Accelerate Student Outcomes

Data-Based Individualization (DBI) is a systematic, evidence-based process for intensifying literacy instruction. During this webinar, team members from Weidman Elementary shared their DBI implementation story and how DBI implementation is accelerating outcomes for students experiencing significant and persistent difficulty in reading.

Key Assessment Practices for Acceleration: Implementation in Action

Key Assessment Practices for Acceleration

In this session, presenters provide concrete criteria and research-based examples of how districts/schools can reduce assessment time and accelerate learning by focusing on essential skills and clearly targeted assessment purposes.

Tier 1 Essential ELA Skills

Tier 1 Essential ELA Skills

This session prepares educators for class-wide instruction in ways that will result in accelerating students' reading progress. Methods to differentiate instruction and use curricular materials to meaningfully engage students are discussed.

Tier 1 Essential Math Skills

Tier 1 Essential Math Skills

This session outlines the value of using a structured, cognitively guided approach to problem-solving using coherent instructional routines. Additionally, the presenter discusses the role of visual representations in teaching the foundations of fractions.

Using Data Analysis

Using Data Analysis

Data analysis is central to a quality MTSS framework that is supportive of all learners. The seventh-grade team at Washington Middle School in Calumet has embraced approach to address specific needs identified using their Early Warning Indicators (EWI) data. During this webinar, staff from Washington Middle School and Copper Country ISD will share the story of their implementation efforts aimed at accelerating learning outcomes for their 7th grade students in a pilot program called “Flex.”
