Special Education Personnel Approvals
Intermediate school districts (ISDs) and their member districts can request approvals for certain special education personnel, which are granted by the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) Office of Special Education (OSE) through the Michigan Online Educator Certification System (MOECS).
Deaf/Hard of Hearing & Visual Impairment Consortia for Teacher Preparation
Deaf/Hard of Hearing Consortium
The goals for the Deaf or Hard of Hearing Consortium for Teacher Preparation are to provide teachers who hold a Michigan teaching certificate and live in Michigan to earn an additional endorsement in Deaf/Hard of Hearing and to address the need for teachers to meet the unique needs of students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. Courses are chosen from a variety of excellent DHH programs at universities throughout the United States.
Visual Impairment Consortium
The goal for creating the Visual Impairment Consortium for Teacher Preparation is to increase the number of teachers available to meet the unique needs of students who are Blind/Visually Impaired. The diversification of the program offered by institutions of higher education in multiple states, including one Michigan university, will provide students the flexibility to choose courses among a variety of institutions that have well-established programs in Visual Impairment (VI).
Initiatives
Alt+Shift
Alt+Shift, encompassing Michigan's Integrated Mathematics Initiative, strives to shift the way educators approach education by expanding perceptions of what is possible and promoting alternative practices that allow each of our learners to reach their full potential.
With a focus on collaboration with educators and positive impacts for students, Alt+Shift provides training, technical assistance, and co-constructed implementation planning designed to create and sustain accessible educational environments in which students learn and thrive.
Michigan's MTSS Technical Assistance Center
The MiMTSS Technical Assistance Center, formerly Michigan's Integrated Behavior and Learning Support Initiative (MIBLSI), works on behalf of the MDE to provide a continuum of technical assistance to ISDs, districts, and schools in a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework.
The center's mission is to improve outcomes for all learners by assisting educators in developing infrastructures to support high-quality and sustained implementation of effective, data-driven practices within a Multi-Tiered System of Supports framework.
