Tribal Consultation in Michigan
Tribal Consultation in Michigan
The 12 federally recognized Tribal Nations that share geography with the State of Michigan represent sovereign governmental entities with a long history of government-to-government relationships. With the signing of treaties, the passage of various laws, and the enactment of numerous policies and executive orders, these relationships changed and expanded to include federal, state, and local units of government, including local educational agencies (LEAs). As such, non-tribal governmental units have an obligation to meaningfully engage with tribes and tribal leaders on matters that may impact their tribal communities and citizens.
The information provided on this page is designed to assist those engaged in consultation with tribes to better understand the requirements and best practices around developing consultative relationships with Tribal Nations on educational matters.
