The Emergency Food Assistance Program
The Emergency Food Assistance Program
The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) is a federal program that helps supplement the diets of income eligible individuals and households by providing them with USDA foods at no cost.
TEFAP foods are distributed through community action agencies, food banks, pantries, and mobile distributions, to name a few.
What is TEFAP
TEFAP can help you by providing healthy foods to supplement your food budget. TEFAP is a federal program that helps supplement the diets of income eligible individuals and households by providing them with emergency food assistance at no cost.
The types of foods USDA purchases for TEFAP vary depending on the preferences of States and on agricultural market conditions. More than 120 nutritious, high-quality products are available. Products include canned, frozen, dried, and fresh fruits and vegetables, eggs, meat, poultry, fish, nuts, milk and cheese, and whole-grain and enriched grain products including rice, cereal, and pasta.
Participant eligibility for TEFAP in Michigan is 200% of the poverty level, or about $1,200 a week for a household of four.
TEFAP is distributed in every Michigan county. TEFAP foods are distributed to a variety of sites such as pantries, churches, senior centers, senior housing, and community buildings. TEFAP is offered by Food Banks and Community Action Agencies through pantries, mobile pantries, drive-thru distributions, and congregate feeding sites.
