How to Apply
New this Year!
We are excited that everyone that submitted a complete 2024-2025 10 Cents a Meal application was awarded! We recognize that grant awards are smaller than they have been in the past due to the decrease in our program funding this year.
To review and approve applications for 2024-2025, we used the Application Scoring Rubric. Application responses were scored out of thirty points. Successful applicants were grouped based on their application scores and awarded grants of whichever was less – the applicant’s requested budget or a percentage of their maximum possible award. The maximum possible award is 10 cents times every meal served last year for a Child Nutrition Program (CNP). You will find the Grant Award Notification (GAN) in your NexSys application at the “Award” tab, after the application status has been changed to “State Funds Available.”
Failure to spend most of your 2024-2025 award may decrease the likelihood of receiving a future grant award as the percentage of your budget spent during 2024-2025 will be considered when reviewing your 2025-2026 application, with preference given to grantees who spend a high percentage of their award. This means that it is important that your 2024-2025 award reflect your actual capacity to buy and serve local food.
We intend to support grantees that request to change their 2024-2025 award. Grantees will have the opportunity to request to increase or decrease their 2024-2025 award, and we will reach out to grantees regarding reallocation options and support later this program year.
Additional use of funds
This year, we have expanded the allowable uses of funds for the 10 Cents a Meal grant. In addition to helping you pay for local food items, you will now be able to use up to 25% of your grant award to pay for delivery fees, mileage costs, and labor expenses that support the goals of the program. To be reimbursed for these expenses, grantees must provide a description of the services completed, the date or month of the expense, the cost, and the name of the vendor or staff person who completed the services. That information will be submitted to MDE annually in GEMS/MARS and kept on record by the grantee.
The purpose of these funds is to enable grantees to expand their ability to process local food, increase scratch cooking, and access new suppliers, new food products, and/or new partnerships with other Child Nutrition Program (CNP) sponsors to strengthen the local food supply chain. This is a new page in the application in the general information section.
