How to Apply
2024-2025 Reallocation Update
The 2024-2025 reallocation process is complete. In addition to the approved purchases through May 19, 2025, we forecasted expenses through September 30, 2025, for all grantees when automatically adjusting 2024-2025 award amounts.
An updated Grant Award Notification letter is available in NexSys. To view the updated award letter, grantees can go into the approved 2024-2025 10 Cents a Meal application in NexSys and select the “Award” tab in the left menu bar. This will generate a PDF of the award letter.
Grantees with a recalculated 2024-2025 award larger than their original requested budget have been contacted in NexSys regarding amending the requested amount on the Budget Item page of their 2024-2025 10 Cents a Meal application. Once the amendment is submitted and approved, an updated award letter will be available.
Grantees can request a change to their updated award by submitting an amendment to their 2024-2025 application in NexSys by Tuesday, August 19, 2025. Grantees considering amending their requested budget should include planned purchases through September 30, 2025, in their calculations. Additionally, the percentage of the 2024-2025 award that each grantee can spend during the program year will be considered when reviewing 2025-2026 applications, with preference given to grantees who spend a high percentage of their budget.
We encourage grantees to continue buying local for 2024-2025. All eligible purchases for September 1, 2024, through September 30, 2025, must be submitted in GEMS/MARS by October 14, 2025.
2025-2026 Application Available Now!
We are excited to announce that the 2025-2026 program year application for 10 Cents a Meal is available in NexSys through September 17, 2025! The program year starts October 1, 2025, and goes through September 30, 2026.
Any sponsor of a federal Child Nutrition Program (CNP) is eligible to apply for 10 Cents a Meal. The application must be initiated and submitted by a NexSys Level 5 user. Completed applications are due in NexSys by Wednesday, September 17, 2025.
Competitive Application – Use the Rubric!
As the 10 Cents a Meal program has grown over the years, the grant application is competitive. The maximum possible award is 10 cents times every meal served in child nutrition programs the prior year.
There is a 2025-2026 Application Scoring Rubric available so that applicants know what we will be looking for when scoring applications. The rubric contains guidance on what details to include in responses to the application questions on the Program Information page to receive a higher application score, and all applicants should refer to the rubric as they complete the application. 50% of an applicant’s score will consist of the Program Information page responses and any bonus points for submitting the application early.
50% of the application score for returning applicants will be based on their ability to spend their requested award for the 2024-2025 program year and complete the required reporting surveys. New grantees will be given a boost in past performance points.
