Deputy State Director of Emergency Management, Michigan State Police

Capt. Kevin Sweeney began his career with the Michigan State Police (MSP) as a trooper working at the Newaygo Post in 1996, where he served 8 years. In 2004, Captain Sweeney promoted to the position of uniform sergeant at the Rockford Post. After serving two years at the Rockford Post, he transferred to the Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division (EMHSD).  Here he spent five and a half years working with various programs and was later promoted to the rank of lieutenant serving as the 6th District Emergency Management Coordinator. After ten months in this position he was promoted to first lieutenant as commander of the Lakeview Post, where he served 8 years.  In April 2020, Captain Sweeney was promoted to his current rank and position, as commander of the Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division, and deputy state director of Emergency Management.

In 2010, Captain Sweeney received the MEMA President's Award and earned his Professional Emergency Manager (PEM) certification in 2011.  Captain Sweeney is a graduate of the 256th session of the FBI National Academy (2012). 

Captain Sweeney has a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (1995) and Master of Social Science, Criminal Justice (2016) from Michigan State University. 

Captain Sweeney currently lives in Rockford with his wife and four children.
