The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) partnered with the Michigan Department of Labor & Economic Opportunity (LEO) to create the Michigan Electric Vehicle (EV) Workforce Hub. This initiative works to ensure every Michigander has equitable access to high-quality training, education and services that provide a path to a good career without leaving their community.
The EV Workforce Hub is a statewide initiative that convenes a wide variety of stakeholders impacted by mobility workforce issues for the purpose of advancing meaningful projects and pursuing stakeholder-informed, consensus-based policy reforms that enhance Michigan’s workforce system.
Participation in the EV Workforce Hub initiative is open to organizations in the state, however it is anticipated that the work will be driven forward by a smaller group of individuals with the willingness and capacity to help convene workgroups and manage projects.
The three workgroups will be established to advance one of the four key objectives agreed to by stakeholders at the Hub kickoff event. Each will be led by key partners who will have responsibility for helping move the work forward.
Aligning employers on skills needs, expanding data sharing between employers and training institutions, and increasing coordination across the workforce system.
Synchronizing and expanding access to training curriculum for battery, advanced manufacturing, and electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure jobs and scaling pre-apprenticeship and career readiness programs with a focus on underrepresented groups and minority populations.
Addressing structural barriers to workforce participation, such as difficulty accessing childcare and public transit, with a particular focus on underserved communities.

The EV Workforce Hub builds on the existing work initiated through strategic initiatives, like the Electric Vehicle Jobs Academy and the Community & Worker Economic Transition Office — designed to ensure Michigan workers benefit from the transition to clean energy technologies in the auto industry.
Goals have been further developed and refined in collaboration with state and local partners, including public and private training providers, community colleges and universities, labor unions, workforce organizations, industry/employers, philanthropic organizations and more. The EV Workforce Hub is designed to enhance the progress of existing work, leveraging technical assistance from the Biden-Harris Administration to address challenges identified by local stakeholders.
To align the goals of the EV Workforce Hub with the state’s existing priorities, LEO has relaunched the EV Jobs Academy within the Hub to expand its current mission and fill several critical gaps that have been identified since the Academy was originally announced.
The EV Workforce Hub will play a direct role in convening stakeholders across the entire state.
The EV Workforce Hub will create an expressway for the workforce system and ensure there is no wrong turn by increasing transparency and improving referral processes.
The EV Workforce Hub will work to identify shared problems and develop consensus-based solutions that incorporate the feedback of all stakeholders.
