What makes a successful MCTI student?
As with all postsecondary institutions, assessment, planning, and preparation are essential to ensure a student’s success at MCTI. MCTI is one of many postsecondary training options however it may not be appropriate for every student. Although MCTI is a supportive setting and offers many resources to assist students in being successful, students need to be able to function independently, especially in the residential community at MCTI.
Successful MCTI students typically possess the following skills and characteristics:
Motivation
Being motivated to learn is the most important characteristic an MCTI student can have. Students who want to be at MCTI to learn the skills of a trade and work toward competitive employment are typically the most successful. Students attending MCTI due to outside pressure, and not because of their own interest in training, often have difficulty with successfully completing their training.
Soft skills
Students work on improving their soft skills for employment while attending MCTI. However, successful MCTI students are often familiar with the expectations of a workplace before attending. Some of the soft skills that successful MCTI students demonstrate are attendance and timeliness, following directions, accepting responsibility for their actions, communicating and asking questions appropriately, and showing consistent effort to complete work.
Independent living skills
Because students are living independently in a dormitory environment, it is important that students have the skills in various independent living areas. Successful MCTI students are independent in maintaining their grooming and hygiene, getting up in the morning and arriving to class on time, taking medications in the prescribed manner, maintaining a clean living space, and resolving conflicts with other students through positive communication.
Independent decision making
At MCTI, students have the opportunity to cultivate independence by making responsible choices and developing self-advocacy skills in a supportive residential environment. While MCTI staff are available 24/7 to provide guidance and support, students are expected to navigate their daily activities with personal accountability. Learning to communicate their needs, set boundaries, and seek assistance when necessary empowers students to make informed decisions — academically, socially, and personally — that lead to a fulfilling and successful experience at MCTI.
