Charge Up Michigan Program
Charge Up Michigan Program
The Charge Up Michigan Program is an EV Charger Placement project that aims to build the infrastructure for DC fast charging stations in the state of Michigan to ensure feasibility of all long distance trips for electric vehicle (EV) users, within the state, and also to neighboring states and Canada. To achieve this, the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) and partners (electric utilities and applicant) will provide funding for qualified DCFC EV charging equipment, site preparation, equipment installation, networking fees and signage.

Eligibility Requirements
Public or private organizations that can host publicly accessible charging stations, can fulfill program priorities, and are enrolled in a utility rebate program are eligible to apply for this grant.
Program Priorities
The projects we fund are selected based on reports by Michigan State University named Electric Vehicle Charger Placement Optimization in Michigan: Phase I - Highways and Full Tourism Report and EV Charger Placement Optimization in Michigan: Phase II - Urban Report.. These reports predict the optimal number and placement of DC fast chargers to provide basic charging infrastructure throughout the state, including highways and select urban areas.
We have already funded many such projects, and we plan to prioritize the remaining funding on projects that cover unfilled "nodes" and areas where more charging stations are needed. You can check the "Charge Up Michigan" layer on the Michigan Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Programs Map and the Urban Report to determine which nodes are still eligible for funding. Additionally, we will consider applications from those seeking to install EV charging stations in dense urban areas.
Funding Amount
The grant amount will be the lesser of 33.3% of the total cost or a direct match of the amount the electric utility is paying, up to $70,000, and can only be used for eligible EV charging equipment.
Grant awards will be distributed on a reimbursement basis only, meaning grantees must pay project costs in full prior to receiving funds from EGLE. EGLE will reimburse grantees their award amount once proper invoices, receipts, and proof of payments have been received and reviewed.
Awardee Obligations
- Charge Up Michigan Sample Grant Agreement and Appendix
- Provide monthly progress updates via email to the program coordinator as needed
- Report charging session metrics
- Provide documentation of project expenditures (e.g., invoices, receipts, and proof of payments)
- Submit payment request via email to the program coordinator within 30 days of completing the project
Timeline
EGLE will accept and process applications on a first come, first serve basis until funding is exhausted.
Preparing Your Application
There are several steps an applicant needs to take prior to submitting an application to this program, including:
- Verify your site is in an eligible location with the Michigan Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Programs Map. If you are not the owner of the site, a site host agreement must be secured.
NOTE - Only the nodes (i.e., blue dots) in the "Charge Up Michigan" layer with the "Number of Remaining Chargers Needed" listed as greater than 0 are open for funding through this program. - Connect with your utility provider to get a site assessment to determine if power upgrades are necessary. You will need a letter of support from your utility provider to be considered for funding. Several investor-owned utilities have rebates programs that can be used as matching funds:
- Form your team
- Not sure where to start? Check out our EV Infrastructure Project Partners Directory to identify partners with services to meet your needs/broadcast your own services
- Fill out the EV Infrastructure Project Partners Form to get added to the Directory
- Secure a quote from your selected charger hardware and software provider
- Secure a quote from your selected installation and maintenance provider
