Community District Library Burns Township
Community District Library (Burns Township)
Burns Township is collaborating with the Community District Library (CDL) to create a new Community Center and Library. This project will relocate the Byron branch of the library and the Burns Township headquarters within a new accessible Community Center (to be constructed in 2024), combining and expanding community services from both partners.
Burns Township was organized in 1835. The modern municipality addresses public services and resources for its 3,280 citizens. Burns Township officials hold township meetings the first Monday of each month to discuss public matters including the fire department, ambulance report, library, accessor report, county commissioner report, planning commission, building, broadband, cemetery, ordinances, and other issues. This project realizes a 25-year-old vision to build new facilities in a Community Center that holds community events, elections, and essential services such as the fire department.
Founded in 2004, the CDL serves Shiawassee County by providing full access to information, programming, and technology. It has seven branches throughout the county, including: Bancroft, Byron, Corunna, Lennon, Morrice, New Lothrop, and Perry. From 2022 to 2023, CDL welcomed over 62,000 visitors to its branches and facilitated 81,400 check-outs of digital and physical items. It hosted over 650 community programs with 7,227 attendees. The Byron branch of CDL contributed 5,265 visitors, of which 70% are estimated to be students, facilitated 3,900 physical check-outs, and hosted 67 programs with 491 attendees. With its current location in Byron High School, there are significant barriers to access the library and it is unable to offer its visitors wi-fi, a fundamental service. By relocating to the new Community Center, a half mile from its current location, the library will be able to expand operating hours, purchase new equipment, and offer wi-fi and general digital services.
This project will enable Burns Township and the Byron branch to expand their services for residents, supporting 30% more public use and increasing programming by 52% and technological resources by 100%. The Byron branch will provide essential services including access to workforce development tools and wrap-around services including education support, after-school programming, summer reading programs, elder services, and health services. The new center will also support municipal and community events such as voting and enable the Burns Township Fire Department to expand its services with space for new equipment.
