Michigan's Voices for Volunteerism, A 10-City Listening Tour
Michigan is facing some uncertain times; in part due to a high unemployment rate, budget cutes, and elimination of critical services. The MCSC has been tasked with developing a State Service Plan geared towards utilizing service as a strategy to guide Michigan on its road to recovery. "Michigan's Voices for Volunteerism" will prepare the MCSC and its service partners for this task by gathering valuable community input from a diverse audience.
"It will take everyone coming together to address Michigan's toughest challenges," said Paula Kaiser VanDam, MCSC Executive Director. "Our upcoming listening tour will engage participants in an opportunity to share thoughts, concerns, best practices, and much more on how to address issues such as hunger, homelessness, unemployment, illiteracy, high school dropouts, and the environment."

Members of the MCSC's Board of Commissioners, as well as key leaders of the volunteer and nonprofit community, will facilitate conversations on how to expand volunteerism and service in the state.

The Michigan Community Service Commission builds a culture of service by providing vision and resources to strengthen communities through volunteerism. In 2009-10, the MCSC is granting more than $8.5 million in federal funds to local communities for volunteer programs and activities. The MCSC is funding 19 AmeriCorps programs and 20 Learn and Serve programs. The Governor's Service Awards and Mentor Michigan are also premier programs of the MCSC. The MCSC is housed in the Michigan Department of Human Services, whose mission is to assist children, families, and vulnerable adults to be safe, stable, and self-supporting. The Corporation for National and Community Service grants the federal funding the MCSC administers.
