Michigan celebrates Women Veterans Recognition Day by helping veterans access career guidance and skill development
LANSING, Mich. — The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) and its Veterans’ Employment Services (VES) team are celebrating the June 12 observance of Women Veterans Recognition Day. Run by veterans, for veterans, VES helped more than 6,000 Michigan veterans in 2024 with building the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the workforce.
Women Veterans Recognition Day acknowledges women’s service, sacrifice and lasting contributions to our nation in a field that was once largely male-dominated. Since the passage of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act of 1948, which gave women the right to serve as permanent members of the military, their impact has grown in both visibility and importance.
LEO Veterans’ Career Advisor Melanie Mauai joined the Navy to see the world and gain lifelong skills — an experience that ultimately shaped her purpose and career. The Navy provided an opportunity for her to jumpstart her life and gave her the discipline, tools and structure to succeed. Mauai has led group training sessions designed to connect veterans with critical resources while also equipping them with practical self-care strategies to support their overall well-being.
“Having served in the military, I understand the unique barriers veterans face in the job market,” Mauai said. “That’s why I’m proud to help fellow veterans prepare for the workforce and access the support they need. The military opened doors for me — from education to global experiences — and now, as a mom, I’m committed to helping others find the stability and opportunity they deserve.”
Transitioning from military to civilian life can be difficult. Many veterans face obstacles, including difficulty translating military skills, the need for disability accommodations and a rapidly shifting job market. Without tailored support, they risk unemployment and long-term job instability.
VES offers a full spectrum of support, including:
- Comprehensive assessments to identify career goals and barriers
- Personalized career guidance and Individual Employment Plans (IEPs)
- Resume-building assistance, interview coaching and job search strategies to improve marketability
- Labor market insights and connections to training programs for high-demand fields
- Case management and outreach to ensure veterans receive ongoing support
“Veterans bring leadership, discipline and adaptability — skills every Michigan employer needs,” said LEO Director Susan Corbin. “Helping them overcome employment barriers is the right thing to do and it also strengthens our economy, fills critical workforce gaps and connects businesses with top-tier talent.”
Veterans’ Employment Services aligns closely with Michigan’s Statewide Workforce Plan, supporting the state’s broader commitment to building an inclusive, opportunity-driven workforce.
“Veterans’ Employment Services play a critical role in supporting thousands of veterans and their families across Michigan each year,” said Stephanie Beckhorn, Deputy Director of LEO’s Office of Employment and Training. “By providing tailored support — like career planning, skills training and employer advocacy — we’re helping veterans find jobs, stability and purpose after service. It’s a powerful example of what happens when we prioritize people and potential.”
