WHEREAS, Access to affordable, reliable energy is a fundamental part of everyday life of Michiganders; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan’s energy workforce boasts 89,000 jobs in Michigan and is expected to increase by 7.1 percent by 2020; and,
WHEREAS, Approximately 50 percent of workers in Michigan’s utility sector will leave the industry over the next five to seven years making it vital to increase worker skills and training programs; and,
WHEREAS, As Michigan’s economy continues to grow and become more competitive, the biggest hurdle is training the right talent with the right skills and matching that talent with in-demand employment opportunities; and,
WHEREAS, Energy-related industries provide a multitude of career opportunities in Michigan ranging from gas and electric lineworkers to power plant operators, customer service representatives to accountants, technicians to engineers, requiring a variety of educational levels; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan’s energy sector is transforming energy generation to cleaner, greener technologies that use more energy efficient practices, by reinvesting in new generation and infrastructure facilities as older facilities are retired over the next ten years; and,
WHEREAS, The Michigan Energy Workforce Development Consortium (MEWDC) is a coalition of employers, educators, and workforce developers dedicated to identify and act on current and future workforce issues that are crucial to building and sustaining Michigan’s energy industry; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan’s energy and utility providers have a presence in schools and on college and university campuses and recruits with a focus on hiring Michigan students;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim October 12-18, 2015 as Careers in Energy Week in Michigan.
