Advanced and Programmatic Coursework

Flexible Learning and Specialized Instruction

Flexible learning options are often used in schools for students to earn college credits or experience instruction through place-based learning. Several organizations offer these options and may have additional requirements beyond Michigan's minimum endorsement requirements to match the subject area and grade level of the course. In these cases, districts may need to consider professional learning completed in addition to Michigan teacher certification requirements.

Advanced Placement

Advanced Placement (AP) courses and exams give students the chance to tackle college-level work while they are still in high school and earn college credit and placement.

Teachers of AP courses must meet the Michigan minimum requirements for the subject area and grade level of the course.

There are not additional formal requirements or mandatory professional development for teachers of AP courses, with the exception of teachers of AP Seminar and AP Research, who must complete a summer workshop and online training.
However, even if it’s not required for your course, College Board strongly recommends that AP teachers take part in professional learning programs in their subject area before teaching the AP course for the first time, and periodically thereafter.

Project Lead the Way

A Project Lead the Way (PLTW) program is a series of modules, units, or courses available for elementary, middle, and high schools, respectively.

PLTW Core Training is cost effective and the benefits don’t stop when a teacher finishes the program. The PLTW Training Guarantee offers free professional development to replace STEM educators. What this means is that if a teacher with PLTW teaching credentials leaves the school system within four years of earning their credentials, PLTW will fund a new teacher to go through the PLTW Core Training to replace that educator so a school can remain committed to the PLTW curriculum.

Teachers of PLTW courses must meet the Michigan minimum requirements for the subject area and grade level of the course in addition to program-specific professional learning requirements.

International Baccalaureate

Teachers of International Baccalaureate (IB) courses must meet the Michigan minimum requirements for the subject area and grade level of the course in addition to program-specific professional learning requirements.

Cambridge International

Teachers of Cambridge International (CI) courses must meet the Michigan minimum requirements for the subject area and grade level of the course in addition to any program-specific professional learning requirements.
