Annual Education Report (AER)

Information on the Annual Education Report

The Annual Education Report (AER) provides detailed information on teacher quality, student assessment and accountability, and other educational information for schools, districts, and the state in one convenient place. The AER is designed to meet the federal requirements of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) for an annual report. Local educational agencies (LEAs) and schools must prepare and communicate AERs using data results from the 2021-22 school year and related information found in the ‘Annual Education Report’ and revised cover letter templates located at MI School Data in the Annual Education Report section.

For information about the 2022-23 Annual Education Report please refer to the FAQ, updates presentation, and timeline below.

In order to fulfill the state’s requirements for an annual education report, the district and schools will need to add the following components: process for assigning pupils to the school, status of the 3-5 year school improvement plan, brief description of each specialized school, identify how to access copy of core curriculum implementation and variances from state’s model, aggregate student achievement results, parent-teacher conference data, and (for high schools only) number and percent of postsecondary enrollments (dual enrollment), number of college equivalent courses offered, number and percentage of students enrolled in college equivalent courses (AP/IB), and the number and percent of students receiving a score leading to college credit. For more information about the state requirements, please see: Michigan Legislature Section 380.1204a.

Sections of the Annual Education Report

Educator Qualifications

  • Identifies teacher qualifications to requirements. Here you can find how many teachers in a school, district or across the state possess specific qualifications.

Student Assessment

  • Presents assessment information for English language arts and mathematics for grades 3 to 8 and 11, and science for grades 4, 7 and 11, compared to targets for all students as well as subgroups of students. The report helps users understand achievement progress within grades and schools, and to make comparisons to the district, state and national achievement benchmarks.

Accountability

  • Uses information from assessments, graduation and attendance rates, and school quality measures, to determine if the school is meeting accountability targets. Here you can identify how well your school is serving the overall academic needs of students. More information about school accountability is available on the MDE Accountability page.

NAEP

  • NAEP administers a state level assessment in Mathematic and Reading every two years. The most current results are from 2022.

Sec. 1003 School Improvement Funds

  • Identifies schools implementing comprehensive support and improvement (CSI), targeted support and improvement (TSI) or additional targeted support (ATS) plans. Here you will find a list of all schools that received section 1003 school improvement funds, including the amount of funds each school received and the types of strategies implemented in each school with such funds. Under Section 1003 of the Every Student Succeeds Act, districts with schools identified for school improvement, corrective action and restructuring under Section 1116 of Title I, Part A may be awarded supplemental funds to support efforts and initiatives aimed at raising student academic achievement.
