Flooding and dam safety

During April 2026, our Dam Safety Unit monitored and/or responded to around 100 dams ranging from Michigan’s southern-most counties up to the Keweenaw Peninsula. Several dams failed and many more experienced record flows and previously unseen loading conditions.

In the aftermath of these flooding events, many dams are left in need of repair or other remedial actions.  Dam owners in need of guidance on dam repair, dam removal, dam rebuilding, or other dam related projects should engage with their regional dam safety engineer and their consulting engineer.

Note: Many dam related projects will require a permit - please reach out to your regional contact to discuss.
