Pigeon River State Forest Incident
On April 16, 2025, Lambda Energy field staff were conducting routine daily flowline maintenance in the Pigeon River Country State Forest in Cheboygan County, when they discovered a leaking flowline. Lambda staff immediately contacted response crews and called the spill into the State of Michigan's Pollution Emergency Alert System (PEAS). An estimated volume of 50 barrels of crude oil/brine were released. Vac trucks and remediation crews were dispatched to the site, absorbent booms and pads were placed along the margins of the spill, and crews have been working diligently to recover fluids. Remedial activities are ongoing, the Pigeon River Council, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Cheboygan County Emergency Manager and EGLE are all aware of the ongoing activities and EGLE staff continues to monitor onsite remedial activities. The spill is in a wetland area, but has not migrated into any creeks, streams, ditches, or rivers, and there are no immediate threats to water wells or the public. Remedial activities will continue until analytical sample results confirm that removal of oil and brine is complete. We will continue to update the status on our website.

Lambda and their environmental contactor have continued to diligently and aggressively complete response activities. To date they have excavated more that 1500 cubic yards of visually impacted soils, recovered over 2500 barrels of fluid, built a temporary access and check dam to reduce surface migration, installed sumps connected via temporary tile to facilitate and accelerate the recovery of any impacted water, installed and sampled numerous monitoring wells, and have begun an investigation to determine the horizontal and vertical extent of contaminant impact. Based on data collected to date, the spill still appears to be contained near the flowline break, with no creeks, streams, rivers, or ditches being impacted and no immediate threats to water wells or the public. We will post another update following the completion of delineation efforts and review of analytical results.
