Best practices for methane gas collection and control and emissions monitoring

Public Act 235 of 2023 recognizes landfill gas as a renewable energy source when landfill operators follow best practices for methane gas collection and control and emissions monitoring, as determined by EGLE.

The best practices will apply to Michigan landfill gas recovery and electricity generation projects seeking qualification as renewable energy systems under Public Act 235. This includes both existing systems seeking continued qualification and new projects.

EGLE is working with technical partners RMI and Fresh Coast Climate Solutions to develop Michigan’s Methane Best Practices. The development process includes:

  • Input from the waste industry, communities, and other stakeholders
  • Review of current landfill practices in Michigan and other states
  • Assessment of costs, benefits, and implementation considerations

Public engagement

EGLE will host public meetings to share information and collect feedback. Stakeholders are encouraged to submit examples of best practices for gas capture, monitoring, mitigation, system performance, and approaches that avoid organic waste disposal.
