Municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) operator certification exam
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) certifies Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators under Part 41 of the NREPA, P.A. 451, as amended.
Application deadline: September 22, 2025.
We will accept applications for the November 6, 2025, exam between June 23, 2025, and September 22, 2025.
Exam application and instructions
Please submit your application as soon as possible within the application timeline. The earlier you submit your application, the more likely it is that staff can provide adequate feedback if you are missing information.
An incomplete application may be denied at any point during the application cycle; however, it is much more likely for staff to review and retrieve missing information to complete your application the earlier you apply.

Municipal wastewater certification examinations are offered twice a year, usually in May and November. Certification is offered for Class A, B, C, D, L1, L2, and SC. Education and experience requirements for each of the classifications are described in the Certification Board Policy. The semester hour credits required at the A and B classifications may be earned from colleges and universities or by successfully completing the appropriate courses from the list of Board Approved Semester Hour Equivalent (SHE) Courses.
Municipal wastewater certifications are valid for three years after issuance.
