Site Supervisor of the Month
Site Supervisor of the Month – April 2023: Christina Chang, AmeriCorps Urban Safety (AMUS) Program
Christina Chang is a current AmeriCorps Site Supervisor for the AmeriCorps Urban Safety (AMUS) Program at Wayne State University in Detroit. The AmeriCorps Urban Safety Program implements a variety of initiatives to increase public safety in neighborhoods throughout the City of Detroit. AMUS members provide Home Safety Assessments, install smoke and CO2 alarms, and create safe routes to school for local students. They also organize neighborhood block clubs and help bridge the gap between local law enforcement and community residents.
Chang is employed at Wayne State University’s Center for Urban Studies as a Research Assistant and Project Coordinator, and also serves as a Site Supervisor to the Detroit Youth Service Corps members. Here she assists in managing AMUS's Water Filter Education Project and deploys members throughout Detroit and surrounding communities.
Chang received her Bachelor’s in Communications from Western Michigan University in June of 2018. After completing her degree, she served in the National Civilian Conservation Corps (NCCC) in the pacific region from 2018-2019. Afterwards, she knew she wanted to continue to be in the National Service community and soon joined the AMUS program staff.
Lisa Carter, the AmeriCorps Program Director, believes that Christina makes it a priority to enhance the member service experience noting that “Christina exemplifies AmeriCorps's mission by ensuring members serve effectively -- and enjoy their service experience,” Carter continues by emphasizing Chang’s priority to help her members develop professionally while also helping the community stating, “Christina also aims to strengthen members as individuals while bringing important resources and education to the community.”
