National Board Certification (NBC) Grant Opportunities

Two grants are tentatively scheduled to become available in mid-January 2024:
- National Board: Recognized Achievement Grant awards money for teachers who currently hold National Board Certification.
- National Board: First-Time Candidate Grant awards money for teachers in Title I schools pursuing National Board Certification for the first time.
Local education agencies (LEAs), both traditional public school districts and public school academies (PSAs), and intermediate school districts (ISDs) must apply for educators that qualify for either of the grants outlined below.

Eligibility
To be eligible, a Michigan teacher must:
- hold National Board Certification by January 1, 2024.
- hold a valid or expired Michigan teaching certificate.
- be employed in a classroom and teach at least 50% of the teacher’s full-time hours, as determined by the district or intermediate school district.
- be employed by the district or intermediate school district as teachers, including those in teacher leadership roles as a peer assistance and review coach, mentor, or other teacher support provider if the position does not require a school administrator certificate.
Grant Awards
Teachers may receive up to $4,000. If employed in a Title I building teachers shall receive up to $10,000.
If the allotted amount of this grant ($4 million) is exceeded due to a high volume of candidates, the awarded grant totals will be adjusted.
First-Time Candidate Grant

Grant Awards
Teachers in Title I buildings pursuing NBC for the first time may receive up to $2,125.

3 years x $75/year application = $225

Who is eligible to apply?
Local education agencies (LEAs), both traditional public school districts and public school academies (PSAs), and intermediate school districts (ISDs) are eligible to apply.
Individual educators are not eligible applicants; they are encouraged to inquire with their building or district administration about submitting a grant application.

Can applicants apply for both grants?
Yes. Applicants are welcome to apply for one or both grants on behalf of eligible teachers. Applicants must be LEAs, PSAs, or ISDs.

Is an administrator with National Board Certification, or in pursuit of NBC, able to receive grant money?
No, as eligibility rules above indicate, administrators are not eligible for either grant.

Yes. A copy of each application template will be available for download here. MDE recommends districts use this resource to carefully draft their responses, keeping a copy for their own records and reference.
