2021 Use of Force Report

The Michigan State Police reported thirteen Use of Force incidents in 2021 that met the qualifying definition for reporting to the FBI's National Use of Force Data Collection. Qualifying uses of force include any action that resulted in the death or serious bodily injury of a person, or the discharge of a firearm at or in the direction of a person.

1/7/2021 4 W/M 1 W/M Search Warrant Service Death Emergency Support Team During a search warrant, a subject pointed a firearm at troopers. Four troopers discharged their firearms causing the death of the subject.
2/21/2021 1 W/M 1 W/M Active Felony Investigation, Attempted Murder Death Emergency Support Team A subject wanted for questioning in a weapons complaint fired on responding troopers. The subject was later located and reached for a weapon; a member discharged his firearm causing the death of the subject.
3/13/2021 1 W/M 1 B/M Traffic Stop Injury Flint Post Troopers conducted a traffic stop; the suspect fled on foot. During the foot pursuit, the suspect fired upon pursuing troopers. One trooper discharged his firearm causing serious injuries to the suspect.
4/12/2021 2 W/M 1 W/F Active Felony Investigation, Aggravated Assault Injury Calumet Post Troopers responded to a shots fired call at a residence. They encountered a suicidal female with a handgun. Troopers discharged their firearms causing serious injuries to the suspect.
4/13/2021 1 W/M 1 B/M Active Felony Investigation, Stolen Vehicle, Flee and Elude Injury Livingston and Washtenaw Narcotics Enforcement Team Troopers responded to a crash with a stolen vehicle; two suspects fled on foot. One subject was located and displayed a firearm. A trooper discharged his firearm causing serious injuries to the suspect.
5/22/2021 2 W/M 1 W/M Response to Unlawful Activity, Domestic Assault Death 6th District HQ Troopers responded to a domestic assault complaint at a residence. The suspect pointed what was later determined to be an air rifle at troopers. Two troopers discharged their firearms causing the death of the suspect.
6/21/2021 1 W/M 1 W/M Active Felony Investigation, Breaking and Entering Death Wayland Post A trooper responded to a breaking and entering complaint and encountered the suspect. The suspect assaulted and then attempted to disarm the trooper. The trooper discharged his firearm causing the death of the suspect.
7/10/2021 1 W/M 1 W/M Response to Suspicious Activity, Suspicious Person Death Flint Post A trooper responded to a suspicious person complaint. The suspect fired upon the trooper during a foot pursuit. The trooper discharged his firearm causing the death of the suspect.
7/19/2021 2 W/M 1 W/M Active Felony Investigation, Aggravated Assault Death Monroe Post Troopers pursued a suspect vehicle involved in a shooting. At the conclusion of the pursuit, the suspect pointed a firearm at responding officers. Troopers and local officers discharged their firearms causing the death of the suspect.
8/3/2021 3 W/M 1 W/M Active Felony Investigation, Armed Robbery, Burglary/Breaking and Entering, Aggravated Assault Death Metro North Post Troopers pursued suspects wanted for armed robbery. The suspects crashed and then forced their way into a residence. One suspect surrendered, the other fired upon responding officers. Troopers discharged their firearms; it was later determined that the suspect shot himself.
8/26/2021 1 W/M 1 W/M Response to Unlawful Activity, Traffic Crash Injury Lansing Post Troopers responded to a traffic crash. One suspect was found to be intoxicated. He then pointed a firearm at troopers. A trooper discharged his firearm causing serious injury to the suspect.
10/6/2021 1 W/M 1 B/M Traffic Stop Injury Niles Post A trooper initiated a traffic stop; a passenger shot the trooper. The trooper then discharged his firearm causing serious injury to the suspect.
10/13/2021 1 W/M 1 W/M Active Felony Investigation, Parole Absconder, Kidnapping, Felonious Assault Death First District Fugitive Team Troopers attempted to effect an arrest for a wanted subject who fled, and then took a hostage at knife point. A trooper and an MDOC Agent discharged their firearms causing the death of the suspect.
