Federal Grant Application Process

The Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning (OHSP) provides grants to eligible entities to conduct effective, data-driven traffic safety programs with federal funding received through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). This is done on an annual basis for projects during a (federal) fiscal year period: October 1 through September 30. The OHSP typically opens the grant application process during the month of February each year for project consideration for the next fiscal year.

FY27 Federal Grant Orientation

The OHSP has recorded two sessions: one non-enforcement orientation and one overtime enforcement orientation. These recordings will be uploaded to the OHSP YouTube site, accessible by direct link only. The orientation links will be distributed to subrecipients via Document Messages in MGX prior to September 30.

To supplement these recordings, the OHSP will host two “office hours” sessions in a hybrid environment so that subrecipients can ask any questions or topics from the orientation recordings directly to OHSP staff. Please see the details below:

The Grant Orientation sign off page in MGX is now live. Once the Agency Project Director has reviewed the grant orientation recording, they are required to sign off via the check box on the FY27 Grant Application.

Michigan Grant System - MGX

Submission of a grant application to the OHSP for a traffic safety behavior change project is done online through the Michigan Grants System (MGX). Registration is required to access the system. Eligible organizations such as state and local government agencies, educational institutions, and non-profit agencies, can request access to MGX by selecting the “MGX New User Registration” button on this page. For specific eligibility criteria and instructions on applying for a grant please read the Grant Proposals Funding Guidelines.
