Centurion Medical, Inc. (Centurion) -- owned by Medline Industries, Inc. -- is located at 301 Catrell Drive in Howell. Centurion provides sterilization services to the medical device industry using ethylene oxide (EtO). The facility has three sterilization chambers. The facility is subject to the federal NESHAP, Subpart O, for EtO sterilizers.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), ethylene oxide is a chemical that is known to cause cancer. Studies of people that work with ethylene oxide show an increased risk of breast cancer and blood cancers (including multiple myeloma, leukemia, and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma).
