The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) has prerecorded course videos related to drinking water distribution systems. These videos are intended for drinking water operators and personnel associated with S-Class water utility distribution systems in the State of Michigan. These lessons will cover basic information in the subjects important to distribution systems.

Please note that these prerecorded courses do not qualify for continuing education credit.

Please do not bring a copy of this to the examination. This sheet was created in conjunction with the Advisory Board of Examiners and the Subject Matter Experts in every examination category.

    Lesson topics include the history of distribution systems.

    Lesson topics include elevated storage tanks, hydropneumatics tanks, bladder tanks, operational issues, and water storage components and issues.

  • Watermain Installation

    Lesson topics include water distribution system components, watermain materials, corrosion of pipe materials, advantages and disadvantages of different materials, joint types, fittings, permits, and project management.

  • Safe Drinking Water Act

    Lesson topics include State regulations under Act 399, administrative rules, rulemaking process, overview of multiple parts of the Safe Drinking Water Act, level 1 and level 2 assessments, and violations.

  • Operation of Distribution Systems

    Lesson topics include routine operations, emergency operations, systems maintenance, flushing, flushing plan and program, hydrant attachments, pressure monitoring, leaks and repairs, valve operations, and chlorination.

    Lesson topics include backpressure, backsiphonage, high hazard, low hazard, testable devices, non-testable devices, inspections and testing.

    Lesson topics include sampling requirements, sampling schedules, certified labs, sample bottles requirements, chain of custody, sampling tap selection, monitoring periods, overview of sampling procedures, packing tips, result interpretation, and reports to EGLE.

    Lesson topics include a variety of case studies on unethical situations.

  • Components of Distribution Systems

    Lesson topics include the main components of a distribution system including meters, hydrants, and valves.

  • Corrosion, Corrosion Control and Lead and Copper Rule (LCR)

    Lesson topics include corrosion basic concepts, preventing corrosion, passivation, phosphate addition, phosphate products, phosphate sampling rules, Langelier index, Larson-Skold index, Michigan's Lead and Copper Rule, lead and copper sampling requirements, tier designation, sample plans, and lead and copper service line replacement.

    Lesson topics include winter well maintenance, wellhouses and pumping stations, storage tank freeze prevention, winter maintenance storage tanks, and methods of thawing hydrants and mains.

    Lesson topics include basic concepts on the continuity equation, pressure, density, and unit conversions.

  • Safety

    Lesson topics include excavation and trench safety, lockout/tagout procedures, confined spaces, working from heights, and personal protective equipment.
