General courses
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) has prerecorded course videos with general information related to drinking water utility systems. These videos are intended for drinking water operators and personnel associated with all levels of water treatment and distribution. Subjects covered include basic math, chemistry, cross connections, and other related topics to water operations and processes.
These videos are intended to give the drinking water operator a better understanding of the basic math, chemistry, processes, and regulations associated with community drinking water.
Please note that these prerecorded courses do not qualify for continuing education credit.
Basic Cross Connection
Basic Cross Connection - Session 1
Lesson topics include cross connection concepts such as backpressure, backsiphonage, high hazard, low hazard, testable devices, non-testable devices, devices, inspections, testing, and an annual cross connection report exercise.
2 hours, 16 minutes
Basic Cross Connection - Session 2
Lesson topics include cross connection concepts such the residential cross connection program, Part 14 of the Safe Drinking Water Act, back flow incidents, cross connection plan, device testing, EGLE sanitary survey, and common hazards and facilities to inspect.
2 hours, 11 minutes
Chemistry
Chemistry Part 1 - Session A
Lesson topics include molecular mass percentages, chemical reactions, balancing chemical reactions, and example problems.
2 hours 9 minutes
Chemistry Part 1 - Session B
Lesson topics include the history of chemistry, parts of an atom, the periodic table, bond types and forms, and naming compounds.
2 hours 43 minutes
Chemistry Part 2 - Session A
Lesson topics include balancing reactions, rules of fractions, unit conversions, and example problems.
2 hours 21 minutes
Chemistry Part 2 - Session B
Lesson topics include balancing reactions, molar masses, history of the mole, molar mass ratios, molar ratio conversion factors, and stoichiometric calculations.
2 hours 24 minutes
Math
Simple Math and Unit Conversions
Lesson topics include how to use simple math and unit conversions.
1 hour, 23 minutes
Areas, Volumes, and Flow Rates
Lesson topics build off the basic knowledge of fractions, decimals, percentages, and unit conversions by expanding upon them. The training takes previous concepts and applies them to the water industry by linking them to calculating areas, volumes, flow rates, and velocities of water.
2 hours, 16 minutes
Chlorination
Lesson topics combine everything covered during previous trainings about fractions, decimals, percentages, unit conversions, areas, volume, and flow rates and relates them to chlorination. This training is designed to show all operators methodology for solving chlorination questions based around volumes and flow rates. Viewers will learn how to calculate dosages, the amount of chemical needed, and the amount of chemicals present in the water.
2 hours, 14 minutes
Hydraulics
Lesson topics combine all the elements of fractions, decimals, unit conversions, order of operations, areas, volumes, flow rates, and velocities and compile them into one concept: Hydraulics. The basics of hydraulics will be covered including static pressure hydraulics based on elevation, fill rates, slope hydraulics, and the continuity equation.
2 hours, 28 minutes
Public Water Supply Ethics Course
Lesson topics include professional ethics as they relate to public water supplies, how professional responsibilities aid in public health, code of ethics examples, water operator certification applications, rules related to disciplinary action of misconduct under Part 19 of the Safe Drinking Water Act, ethical violation examples, case studies, and the criminal penalties associated with unethical conduct.
56 minutes
Safe Drinking Water Act
Lesson topics include why rules are important, regulations, oversight, the Michigan Safe Drinking Water Act, how to read the rules, and information on multiple parts of the Safe Drinking Water Act.
46 minutes
Part of the drinking water operator training series
There are additional video libraries for drinking water operators and personnel associated with drinking water supplies in the State of Michigan. Practice examinations and study guide materials can be found under each general tab for all four license types: Complete Treatment (F levels 1-4), Limited Treatment (D levels 1-4), Distribution (S levels 1-4), and Noncommunity (F, D, and S Level 5).
