Water use reporting in Michigan is required for all large quantity water users to track how much water is being withdrawn to support sustainable management of water resources. It provides data to guide planning, protect ecosystems, and ensure compliance with state water laws and Great Lakes Basin agreements.
All water users with the capacity to withdraw over 100,000 gallons per day must report their annual water use to the State of Michigan by April 1 of each year.
- Agricultural users report to the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) at no cost: agricultural water use reporting
- All other water users report to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE). A $200 annual fee is required for water users that withdraw more than 1,500,000 gallons per year.
